In the middle of the 18th century François Boch Founded a factory in Audun Le Tiche, Lothringen, an independent principality close to Luxemburg. In 1766 the region was incorporated in France and the market with Luxemburg (part of the "Austrian Netherlands") was cut off. That was the reason that Jean François and his brothers Dominique and Pierre Joseph started another factory in Septfontaines, Luxemburg in 1767. After the French revolution Jean François (son of Pierre Joseph) began producing fine earthenware in Mettlach (Saarland) in 1813. The first years were difficult but his wive Rosalie Buschmann backed him up financialy. Their son Eugen took over in 1819 and 7 years later he merged with Nicolas Villeroy from Wallerfangen which was the start of the succesfull Villeroy and Boch combination. In 1856 the company founded a branch in Dresden and in 1883 they won the Schramberger Majolica Factory (SMF) at an auction. In 1921 the Earthenware Factory Franz Anton Mehlem in Bonn (Royal Bonn) was bought but was closed in 1931. In 1948 the Dresden factory was nationalized by the GDR. In 1976 Heinrich Porcelain in Selb was acquired. This fully handainted wallplate is an example of the high quality production of this factory. It shows an early 19th century scene of the Amsterdam Harbour with an early steamship (combined with sails) and a lot of activity ashore. Fully marked at the back with the decoration # 5079, the handpainted factory logo (V&B, M) and imprinted production marks "1044" and "Nr1, BL30". AGE: 1880-1900 DIMENSIONS: Diameter is 17½ inches (=45 cm). CONDITION: EXCELLENT. This plate is in PERFECT condition. No cracks, chips, flakes or any other flaws.
