Woman with Hair by Son Thomas Start Price USD 299.00 Current Price USD 299.00 Time Left - Bid Count 1 Buy It Now Price - Reserve Price - Start Time Wednesday, December 03, 2008 End Time Wednesday, December 10, 2008 Location South Carolina See more about 'Woman with Hair by Son Thomas' Description Woman with Hair by Son Thomas.  Gumbo clay and mixed media, wig, paint, plastic necklace, marble eyes and one earring on left side.  Right side appears to have had an earring at one time as there is a wire in the clay but it has been missing since I purchased the piece in 1999.  You could easily change the earrings out.  9" tall.  Great example of Son Thomas's work.  This piece will be professionally packed and shipped.  James "Son" Thomas, born in 1926, was one of the great Delta blues musicians, as well as a self taught sculptor.  Born in Eden, Mississippi, he was taught to play guitar by his uncle and grandfather, but began to play seriously only after reaching the age of fifty.  Sone afterward, Son's bottle-neck blues style was enthusiastically received all over the world.  Son worked for a while as a grave digger and this profession most certainly stimulated his creation of clay caskets and skulls with human teeth.  He said he made his first skull as a little boy to scare his grandfather who was afraid of ghosts.  Son's music and sculpture were first documented by William Ferris, a folklorist and Director for the STudy of Southern Culture in Oxford, Mississippi.  In 1981 Son's work was included in the "Black Folk Art" show at the Corcoran in Washington DC.  Son Thomas passed away in 1993.  Place a Bid!
