Wonderful hand-decorated vase with applied vegetables, blossom, stems, and leaves. This style is sometimes called Albertine, with large applied flowers in relief. It's underglaze slip decoration, called Barbotine, was derived from Limoges faience, and became extremely popular in this country, especially in Cincinnati in the 1880's. Thomas Jerome Wheatley was involved in several Cincinnati pottery businesses between 1879 and 1882, first as an artist and teacher at Coultry Pottery. The Cincinnati Art Pottery was incorporated in Ohio at the end of 1880 with Wheatley as a partner, and operated under the name T. J. Wheatley & Company until he left the business in 1882. Undated and unsigned, but this vase is undoubtedly the work of Thomas J Wheatley, and dates to the 1880's. this monumental floor vase measures 16.5" tall, and a whopping 31" around the middle. One photo shows the vase next to a tomato can for reference. Shipping weight is over 22 pounds!! This vase is in absolutely excellent condition, with no chips, nicks, cracks, or hairlines.
