Description
Hello, This fine Rookwood vellum plaque has only had one owner, it was purchased by a fine 82 year old's mother in law in 1912 at the Van Briggle factory in Colorado Springs, and was framed in the gilt frame at her special request. They built a cabin the year before in Red Feather Lakes, Colorado, about 50 miles from Colorado Springs, no electricity, no running water, and it remained that way until it was sold last year. Their formal home was in Chicago Heights during the winter, just a few miles from my shop here in Flossmoor. They loved the rugged West the way it was early in the 20th century, collecting Indian artifacts and Western Art. Appearently they were able to meet the artist Edward T. Hurley who hand signed the plaque on the back in pencil across the Rookwood mark 1912. It is mint with overall crazing, in a rare large 9" x 14 1/4" size, the frame adds an extra 7" to those measurements. I consider this to be one of the more important, historically speaking, Rookwood plaques, painted specifically for a Western collector. Good Luck, Regards, John
