Description
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 A very desirable American Historical Staffordshire 7” (top of handle) States Pattern (America & Independence Series) Jug by James & Ralph Clews, c. 1825. The States Series transfer includes banners with 15 states named (the original 13 States plus Kentucky and Vermont), a medallion of George Washington, allegorical figures of Liberty and Justice and different central views showing large estates and houses. The central image on this jug is a large building (mansion) with 2 wings and a river or lake in the foreground. The jug is 7” to the top of the handle and the handle to spout distance is 8”.  There are no maker’s marks, but the pattern is, of course, listed in all of the major American Historical Staffordshire reference books and an identical piece is shown in Arman’s Historical Staffordshire: An Illustrated Check List (p. 17). An identical jug is also pictured in Jeffrey Snyder’s book Historical Staffordshire: American Patriots and Views (p. 44).   The jug shows very well and would be a worthy addition to any collection. I purchased the piece with professional restoration (well done!) and after looking carefully, have decided that the restoration includes some chipping around the top edge and spout and a restored hairline that traveled from the spout down to the base (if you hold the just at just the right angle to the light and look on the inside, you can see a thin line.  No other issues and definitely a rare item that would dress up any advanced Historical Staffordshire collection. Buyer prepays, plus postage.
