Description
Four unique pieces of William Morris commemorative pottery (commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Morris' death) by Laurence McGowan (1942 - ), English potter. His early career was land survey and cartography which began in Australia (where his family had emmigrated) and continued in United Kingdom, Middle East, South America and Canada. It was in Iran where his appreciation for Islamic art was first established. This, along with the aims and influences of the Arts and Crafts Movement, are seen in his work. In his early 30s, McGowan trained at Alvingham Pottery, Lincolnshire and later at Aldermaston Pottery, Berkshire, with Alan Caiger-Smith. In 1979, he established his own workshop in Wiltshire where he is still producing his work today. McGowan has pieces many collections, both private and public.
